Alene was happy to see that Raxus and his cronies were gone when she came outside. The day seemed much more beautiful after her visit to the goddess, the sun was out and the birds singing from the temple rooftops. Vergina is right, Alene thought as she walked, perhaps my dream was to remind me of the blessing that Lucius is to me. She slid the mantle back from her head. I’ll protect him and help him. The thought gave her a sense of purpose. He needed her, just as she needed him. She began to hum.

“Come, Ambrosia. Let’s go to Trajan’s market. I told my friends that we’d shop together. We should just make it on time.”

“Yes, mistress.”

“By Apollo, it’s a beautiful day!”
